  1. Drum Brake

  3. The drum brake is
  4. housed in a hard
  5. metal drum attached
  6. to the wheel hub. 
  7. Inside the housing,
  8. and unattached to
  9. the drum, are a
  10. pair of curved
  11. brake shoes held
  12. away from the drum
  13. by springs.  When
  14. the brake pedal is
  15. pressed, fluid
  16. flows through the
  17. brake lines into
  18. the wheel cylinder. 
  19. Push rods extend
  20. from the cylinder
  21. in both directions
  22. and press the shoes
  23. against the drum.

  25. When brake pedal
  26. pressure is
  27. released, the
  28. springs on the
  29. brake shoes pull
  30. the shoes into the
  31. normal released
  32. position.  The
  33. moving shoes force
  34. the pistons inward
  35. and return fluid to
  36. the master cylinder
  37. reservoir. 
  38.  
  39. Drum brakes can
  40. also be used as
  41. parking brakes.  A
  42. cable attached to
  43. the brake lever
  44. pulls the brake
  45. shoes against the
  46. drum when the brake
  47. lever is pulled.
